The Association KULT was established in 2002. KULT focuses its work on political and peacebuilding education of young people, to enable them to become active and engaged members of their communities. As well as training young people KULT builds strong partnerships with local authorities and the wider community to ensure the long-term sustainability of their projects.

The mission of KULT is the development of an open society, starting from the local/municipal level, where all citizens would be equally involved in all decision-making processes pertaining to public life.

KULT has significant experience in developing and drafting legal regulations at various levels of government. KULT initiated the adoption of the ‘Law on Youth’ in the Federation of Bosnia-Herzagovina and Brčko District, after having created a draft Law on Youth with the assistance of other organisations and in cooperation with the Federal Commission for Youth in the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly. The Law was ultimately adopted.

Association KULT is the founder of the Youth Educational Recreational Centre SPAJALICA, which is located in Ilidža, and the Youth Centre in Gradačac. Activities of these youth centres are closely related with the development of civil society in both entities of Bosnia-Herzegovina, through cooperation with authorities and other important stakeholders, including international organisations, relevant institutions and individuals.

What is particularly worth mentioning is KULT’s street campaign on the subject of partnership between the young people and municipal authorities in the form of ‘silent performance’, which was successfully organised on a number of occasions throughout Bosnia-Herzegovina. The performance has become a part of KULT’s regular programme, which is being upgraded and updated every year in line with current developments and circumstances.

Life concern (LICO) is a non-profit, rights-based NGO operating in West Nile. It was established in 1998 by a group of former seminarians hailing from Nebbi District/Zombo. In 2001 it was registered as a community-based organisation (CBO) with Nebbi District local government to address issues related to the rights of orphans, people living with disabilities (PWDs) and HIV/AIDS.

In 2002, it was transformed into a fully-fledged NGO. Membership was opened to the public, individuals, and later partner CBOs joined the organisation. Its thematic area was expanded to include Human Rights, Democracy and Good Governance education; Peacebuilding, Conflict Resolutions and Transformation; Environment, Food and Income Securities as way of addressing an improved livelihood status of the poor and marginalised in West Nile Region.

LICO targets youths in schools in Uganda to empower them to promote peacebuilding and reconciliation. They have set up a number of peace clubs in schools and conduct annual peace camps in primary and secondary schools in the West Nile region.

LICO engages local stakeholders in dialogue and information sharing as well as reflection on peacebuilding strategies.

Current activities target dialogue for peaceful elections and resource-based conflict mediation – they reach out to land, wildlife and forest officials to facilitate equitable sharing of resource usage. They also provide education on conflict early warning and other peace-related publications.

The Peace and Development Foundation-Africa (PDF-Africa) was founded out of the need to transform a culture of violence in the areas of operation into one of non-violence and reconciliation. PDF-Africa also aims to contribute to environmental conservation as a way of peaceful living with communities’ surroundings and address human-animal conflicts that exist in areas near National Game Parks and Game reserves.

PDF-Africa’s vision is for, “A Reconciled, Developed Harmonious Society and Ecosystem.”

Mission: “Building Sustainable Peace through promoting a culture of Non-violence and Reconciliation.”

Programme Focus Areas

Programme Component 1: Education for Peace

With many dimensions of conflict constantly emerging, there is need to plant seeds of non-violence and reconciliation in schools where no opportunity exists for students to study peacebuilding; this programme would give them the necessary knowledge and skills required.

This programme targets secondary and tertiary students. It is hinged on the background that students in Uganda have continuously sought violent approaches to settle differences between them and administrators. This unfortunately results into heavy fines borne by poor and economically struggling parents. Also this interferes with the smooth learning process of the students who in due course perform poorly and may fail to realise their future dreams and aspirations.

The Peace Education programme also gives the opportunity for disadvantaged students the chance to continue with their education through a scholarship scheme for secondary and tertiary students.

Programme Component 2: Human-Animal Conflict

While elephants are major economic assets in generating tourist revenue, crop raiding by elephants is a cause of increasing levels of conflict between local people and wildlife management strategies across Africa. Unless a cost-effective method of limiting crop damage is found, the pressure on wildlife managers to implement radical methods (such as culling) may become a reality. Conventional methods for keeping elephants away from crops use mostly fortified boundaries, typically electric fences. However these are expensive, difficult to maintain and have met with only limited success. Research now needs to focus on alternative, low cost deterrent methods that can be managed and implemented by the farmers themselves.

The overall goal of the Environmentalist Society is environmental conservation but its activities cover all aspects related to development projects with emphasis on capacity building, raising awareness and peacebuilding. The main objectives of the organisation can be summarised as follows:

To support local communities in implementing environmentally sustainable development projects;

To mobilise its members to help local communities in their development;

To raise awareness about the global, national and local environmental problems with emphasis on hot issues faced by local communities;

To carry out research and study on environment issues that affects the quality of life;

To create partner ship and working relation with local environmental problems with emphasis on hot issues faced by local community;

To promote the issues of human rights, conflict reconciliation and peacebuilding in different parts of the country;

To promote women’s participation in environmental issues.

ES believes that conflict resolution and peacebuilding can be achieved through social work and creation of appropriate links between the different tribes and groups in conflict, making use of traditional norms and regulations that maintained harmony and coexistence for generations in the country. Through such vision ES design its activities in close collaboration with local communities that guide the means of implementation.

The Environmentalist Society was founded in 1986 and registered in the Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) as non-governmental organisation.

Peace & Environment Forum and Peace Camps

This initiative involves capacity building for young people who have been affected by the civil war in the area. The camps also aim to build trust and confidence between different communities through various activities ranging from sports to arts and cultural development.

The objectives of the initiative are as follows:

Raise environmental awareness;

Encourage the spirit of participation and self-help;

Raise awareness on consumer protection and rights;

Spread the culture of peace in the areas focused upon;

Begin tree planting activities for homes and schools.

The Development for People and Nature Association (DPNA) works with local communities on human rights, environment protection and development. Its target population are children, youth people, women and marginalised people.

The Association encourages and addresses the civil participation into political decision making, focusing on empowerment and leadership building through workshops.

DPNA supports local initiatives by providing aid in order to develop projects connected to the welfare of the community and promoting the non-violence culture.

In their projects, DPNA has approached society to the problems that affect children and youth people, achieving commitments, so that, education, training and even job opportunities were opened for them.

DPNA is aware that development cannot destroy natural resources, but it must contribute to conservation. Therefore DPNA executes recycling campaigns for the suitable sorting of rubbish.

The Peace Foundation, based in Muzaffarabad, Azad Kashmir, focuses its work in the fields of environment, education and social awareness. After the earthquake of 2005, the organisation took a timely decision to work not only in the relief activities but to expand its scope by including projects on reconstruction and rehabilitation. The Peace Foundation has also launched a plantation campaign – ‘Green Muzaffarabad’ – in collaboration with the Government of Azad Kashmir and the Federal Ministry of Environment. The organisation claims to have achieved great success through the campaign by becoming a source of inspiration for other organisations. The Peace Foundation also initiated a project on solid waste management with an emphasis on community participation in Muzaffarabad.

The Peace Foundation has also conducted a number of surveys on topics such as pollution awareness, problems women face at work, gender discrimination and child abuse, and HIV/AIDS awareness. These surveys are used by the foundation and other organisations to guide the development of projects in the region.
