Supporting Civil Society’s Work for Peace
A series of initiatives to coordinate a number of organisations and cross-sections of civil society, working collectively towards the common goal of sustainable peace in Nepal.
Description
The organisation has designed the initiative with the aim of strengthening peace activities being conducted by non-governmental organisations and civil society, thereby supporting the peace process in the country.
Aims / Objectives
This initiative aims to fulfil the demands for peace and human rights through a series of training courses, seminars and workshops at different levels.
How it is Articulated
The initiative involves:
- Empowering underprivileged communities and strengthening their capacity to organise themselves into groups;
- Training and workshops on conflict resolution and peacebuilding are held at the grassroots, district and national level; and
- International visits (to Japan, Schengen Member States, Sri Lanka etc) to learn more about conflict resolution and the peace process.
Achievements / Learning Points
The conflict has consequences, not only for the young men and women who lose their lives on the battlefield and their families who lose loved ones, but also for all aspects of political, social and economic life in Nepal. Today, Nepal’s civil society is caught between the conflicting parties – the security forces on the one side and the Maoists on the other.
It has been realised that running development programmes as usual does not alter the fact that the context has changed. There is a great need to address the conflict efficiently and rapidly. Therefore, a series of initiatives have been undertaken by human rights and development organisations, donors and diplomats to promote peace and human rights in Nepal.
HRWF Nepal have been able to coordinate the demands for peace and human rights through a series of training courses, seminars and workshops at different levels. The outcomes will be used to draw up a list of specific recommendations, roles and responsibilities for different actors which will pave the way for a collective effort for the resolution of the conflict.
