Sudan Peace Foundation (SPF)
SPF focuses on behavioural research to identify types of activity conducive to peace or to conflict, and on dissemination of their findings through publications, capacity building and advocacy.
Overview
SPF is an independent, non-profit research foundation founded in July 2002. Its focus is on peacebuilding; it researches patterns of behaviour and ethics within and between ethnic groups to identify both trends with the potential to enhance and promote peace, and types of behaviour which tend to threaten peace. In this way, behaviour that is conducive to peace and national unity can be encouraged, while communities can be sensitised to the risks of the more dangerous activities.
On the basis of this research, SPF aims to establish conflict prevention and resolution structures which emphasise the promotion and advocacy of human rights and social justice. It believes in the value of traditional African conflict resolution systems and institutions, and in the perspectives of Christianity and integrated law. It aims to demonstrate the dangers of tribalism, nepotism, religious discrimination, corruption and the abuse of power on the peace and unity of the nation.
SPF’s specific activities include advocacy and capacity-building within communities to provide for the peaceful resolution of community issues; the publication and dissemination of resource materials based on the findings of its behaviour research; and developing networks and collaborative efforts between institutions, organisations and people involved in peacebuilding work, regionally, nationally and internationally. It believes that it is in a position to fill operational gaps in the useful peacebuilding efforts currently being conducted by church groups, especially the New Council of Churches (NSCC).
