Defending and supporting the CPA
A project to promote understanding and acceptance of Sudan's Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
Description
The initiative took place in 2005, partly organised by the SECS main office and partly by branches in different states. All of the activities were witnessed by more than 150 thousand people from different backgrounds. SECS succeeded in increasing understanding and acceptance of the comprehensive peace agreement (CPA), overcoming challenges such as the weather and the dangerous security situation following the death of Dr. John Garang.
Aims / Objectives
The initiative aimed to increase understanding and acceptance of the CPA throughout Sudanese society, as a means of promoting the concept of peace.
How it is Articulated
The initiative consisted of a number of activities:
- The study of the environmental dimension of the peace agreement;
- Peace dissemination and promotion of the concept of sustainable peace;
- Theatre work about the peace agreement;
- A video production about how local dances reflect peace;
- Cultural diversity exhibition;
- Recording children’s peace songs.
Achievements / Learning Points
At the main office, SECS conducted a number of workshops in 2004 and 2005, training people in the concept of peace and the main structure of the CPA, producing a simplified version of its protocols and analysing the outcomes of previous activities. In the district branches around the country, SECS members conducted seminars on the CPA protocols. A number of originally unplanned drama and puppetry workshops also took place as part of the initiative.
