Women's Rehabilitation Centre (WOREC)
WOREC seek to mitigate the impact of Nepal's conflict on women, children and minority groups through counselling, capacity building and advocacy projects.
Overview
The mission of WOREC is to work for universal social justice and human rights, particularly for women, children and marginalised groups of people. To achieve this mission, WOREC has been working in partnership with communities and local and national governmental and non-governmental organisations. The organisation has been implementing peace programmes as well as other programmes in connection with human rights, women’s rights and social justice.
The organisation aims:
- to provide quality counselling services to conflict victims through its counselling centres;
- to improve local communities’ access to information and increase community support for the peacebuilding process. Currently, most rural communities are unaware of peacebuilding techniques;
- to contribute to improving the human rights situation and pressure the government into taking responsibility for conflict transformation and peace in the country. For example, WOREC organised a peace summit for this purpose;
- to gather information about the status of people displaced by the violence of the political conflict.
- to support women and children affected by the conflict.
WOREC has been mobilising communities by implementing programmes to promote human and women’s rights and peace. These have involved national level advocacy including a regional peace summit held last year in all parts of Nepal, with the exception of the far western region.
The summit was held in order to raise the profile of voices for peace on a national level and a report of the peace summit has subsequently been published.
WOREC has also established counselling centres in Morong, Sunsari and Udayapur districts for victims of the present armed conflict and other domestic and social violence. It has noted that increasing numbers of civilians have been victims of the conflict, and in many ways women and children are in the worst position.
