Overview

Sudanese Environment Conservation Society (SECS) is a registered NGO and national voluntary society established in 1975. Its main goal is the conservation of the environment and the achievement of sustainable development through community participation. SECS is an active NGO enjoying a leading role in the formulation and execution of an environmental literacy programme. It aims at emphasising the strong linkage between environmental well-being and the welfare of the people, and believes that people's participation and involvement are key in achieving this end. SECS' target groups are the public at large with an emphasis on local communities and intermediate groups or multipliers, decision makers, teachers, the legal community, women, farmers, pastoralists and local leaders. Membership is composed of men, women, professionals, teachers, students and ordinary citizens.

SECS' primary goal is to achieve sustainable development through the participation of all stakeholders in environmental conservation. Its specific objectives are:

  • to propagate environmental awareness;
  • to conserve the environment in collaboration with government institutions and relevant NGOs;
  • to advocate the enforcement of environmental laws and challenge threats to the environment.

The organisation also has active units working on peacebuilding projects. The society’s activities and campaigns focus on:

  • desertification as the main environmental problem in the Sudan;
  • issues related to natural resources;
  • pollution issues;
  • issues related to IDPs and socioeconomic and environmental problems;
  • conflict transformation, peacebuilding and the dissemination of the culture of peace;
  • women’s empowerment.
