SCOPE
SCOPE builds the capacity of rural communities to use the knowledge they already possess in order to solve agricultural problems. They also provide training in diverse areas including first aid and pump repairs.
Overview
SCOPE was established after the violent conflict had ended. The current staff of the organisation were working in foreign organisations, until they came to believe that unless they built their own organisation they could not help their people. The main objective for SCOPE is to increase the capacity of the village community to manage their resources and solve their problems. We take this approach for three reasons:
- The village community has much knowledge about the environment, so SCOPE can help them to benefit from the information that they have. E.g. they know which insect will come in autumn and may reduce their crop yield. When they tell SCOPE about this they might find a consultant or drugs to help them get rid of the insect etc.
- The village community has many resources - either human or natural. SCOPE comes to activate this.
- There are many people that want to help but who need some organising to benefit others. According to all of the above we start with building capacity.
