Sahara Paramarsha Kendra (SPK)

A Nepali organisation specialising in delivering psychosocial counselling and support, which now focuses on tending to the needs of conflict victims. SPK also trains members of its partner organisations to deliver counselling across the nation.

Overview

SPK is a national level NGO providing help to individuals who face problems with psychological development in and interaction with a social environment. More recently, the organisation has been providing psychosocial services to victims of the Nepal conflict and mobilising psychosocial counsellors in the conflict areas. SPK has an expert team of psychologists in the central office in Kathmandu and has trained members of its nationwide partner organisations. The expert team of psychologists and the trained partner members provide the counselling services.

SPK aims:

• To provide services to individuals with psychosocial problems;
• To design and conduct training in the fields of counselling and psychosocial support;
• To create awareness and support the community with issues of mental health and conflict; and
• To support the peace process.

SPK has delivered training in psychosocial counselling to 60 people from its partner CBOs and NGOs working in the field of conflict across the nation. This has developed their capacity for working in conflict areas and mobilised them to provide support to conflict victims. Furthermore, it has developed the 60 partner organisations as counselling centres. SPK itself has a national level counselling centre situated in Kathmandu.
