Resunga Human Rights Awareness Organisation

RHRO assists victims of the Nepali conflict in defending themselves against human rights violations.

Overview

The Resunga Human Rights Organisation (RHRO) was established more than a decade ago with the aim of working on human rights and social justice. It is further committed to work in the field of peace by raising people's awareness of non-violent means for resolving differences and creating public pressure to resolve the Maoist conflict through peaceful means.

The organisation has the following aims and objectives:

  • to defend human rights by raising awareness of the issue, particularly among conflict victims;
  • to rehabilitate the conflict victims;
  • to develop a system that encourages conflict victims to report cases of rights violation;
  • to eliminate impunity.

RHRO has become one of the organisations in the district most committed to human rights and peace. It has trained several human rights and peace activists and leaders and mobilised them to advocate for human rights, enabling them to document and disseminate information regarding human rights violations, particularly in connection with the conflict. The organisation has established groups of conflict victims and built up the their participants’ capacity in various ways. It has made them aware of their rights and helped them to file cases in court or with the National Human Rights Commission. It has noticed that the conflict victims' groups have become more aware of their rights and are spontaneously working for the protection of human rights. RHRO has learnt that mass human rights violations have occurred during the conflict in Nepal and that the victims of the conflict have been ignored or left to their own fate. It has therefore been working to raise the victims’ awareness of their rights, assisting them with legal matters, and building their capacity in defending against human rights violations. The organisation believes that the conflict has no military solution, but should instead be solved by negotiation, and that the victims must be guaranteed justice in any peace agreement reached by the conflicting parties.
