National Malika Village Development Centre (NMVDC)

The organisation seeks to promote peace in Nepal by implementing income generation and economic advancement programmes for conlict victims from a variety of backgrouds.

Overview

The organisation was established with the aim of improving the economic situation of local people through income generation. The organisation is locally based and has been focusing on rural development. In recent years, it has expanded its areas of work into peace and conflict with the aims of rehabilitating the conflict victims and supporting the post-conflict peacebuilding process.

The organisation aims to support the establishment of lasting peace through income generation programmes providing economic and social sustainability to the conflict victims, former members of Maoist militias and people living in extreme poverty.

The NMVDC has been working to rehabilitate conflict victims and former members of Maoist militias through income generation programmes. It has realised that the conflict victims have been economically insecure and socially excluded. Therefore, the organisation has been implementing income generation programmes such as vegetable farming, goat farming and Village Animals Health Workers (VAHW) programmes for the conflict victims. It has also provided these programmes to those living in extreme poverty in the village so they do not become involved with violence and get recruited into the Maoist militias.

The organisation has found that unemployment and poverty are also causes for the conflict and for poor people to become involved with the Maoist militias.

In total, 430 people have benefited from the programmes. Out of the total numbers, 12 are conflict victims and 2 are former members of Maoist militias.

The organisation has established 3 groups in three different Village Development Committees (VDCs) in Gulmi district, keeping in regular contact  with the people who have benefited from the programmes and provides necessary things such as suggestions and material support for their work. The groups also work to remove the potential threat of becoming conflict victims again and offer continuous support to the income generation projects.
