National Peace Campaign (NPC)

The organisation seeks to promote peace in Nepal through education of local communities, and by facilitating their interaction with other peacebuilders.

Overview

NPC is a non-governmental, non-profit, and non-sectarian educational organisation committed to promoting peace and conflict resolution in South Asia, in general and in Nepal particularly, through education, research, training and diplomacy.

The National Peace Campaign works towards promoting peace and conflict resolution in South Asia while simultaneously devoting itself to issues concerning human rights, democracy and social development in the region.

More specifically, the organisation works to educate people about their right to peace, train peace activists and foster stronger cooperation among local and international peace builders. The NPC also conducts action-oriented research on local, national and regional problems, emphasising issues and problems generally neglected and ignored at policy and planning levels. This research has included "The Costs of War" and “Failed Negotiation: Past Experiences and Future Challenges". The NPC plans on becoming more committed to working on peace and democracy in Nepal in the future despite the currently unfavourable situation. The present government chaired by the King through a royal military coup recently introduced a "Code of Conduct" for NGOs.

More than 200 people have been trained in "Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding," many of whom have become very good trainers themselves. A training manual on "Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding" and research on “The Costs of War” and “Failed Negotiation” have been published. "The Costs of War" was published in both English and Nepali. The NPC has been able to establish a cross-party link in the parliament and is working to develop common agendas to end the internal armed conflict and resolve the constitutional and political crises in Nepal. The NPC has realised that personal, as well as official, contact is necessary to their work. For example, the organisation has been able to work with political parties because it started interacting with senior leaders on a personal basis, ultimately resulting in the group’s formation. As a result, it has been easier to work with the group over the last three years.

What Services Are Provided?

The organisation has been providing interaction, workshops, training, research, and international exposure visits. These have been provided to mid-level senior political leaders and members of civil society, women groups and members of local organisations.

Geographical area of operation

Currently the organisation is working in Kathmandu. It had past programmes in Rolpa, Salyan and Jajarkot districts of the Mid Western Region of Nepal.

Funding resources

The activities of NPC have been funded by DfID-Nepal and Misereor, Germany.
