Medios Para la Paz (MPP)

MPP (Media for Peace) is a journalist group created to encourage responsible conflict reporting in Colombia.

Overview

Medios Para la Paz was created to encourage responsible reporting in Colombia. It calls for media professionals to reflect on their role in the conflict and to consider how they can help overcome it through thoughtful journalism. It also encourages the disarmament of speech. The group holds regular conferences and workshops for journalists to teach them how to report on conflict. MPP is part of the Journalist Protection Commission of the Ministry of the Interior.

It is also part of the Antonio Narino Project for the Defence of Freedom of Speech and the Right to Information (PAN). The group consists of 6 press agencies: Fundación Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano, Medios Para la Paz, Fundación para la Libertad de Prensa (FLIP), Fundación Freidrich Ebert de Colombia (FESCOL), Fundación Social and Andiarios. MPP is affiliated to MediaChannel, a global network of over 900 journalist groups and editors combatting misinformation.

Media for Peace has organised 73 workshops aimed at helping journalists to reflect on how to write about conflict situations. 2000 journalists from 841 different press groups and institutions have taken part in these workshops, which took place in 28 different municipalities including critical conflict zones.

Their principal aim is to foster responsible journalism when reporting on stories associated with armed conflict and peace efforts in Colombia.

Over the 8 years that it has been running, MPP has received financial support from numerous groups: Programa por la Paz, Fondo de Paz, Fundación Social, Fundación Suramericana de Seguros, Instituto de Estudios Políticos y Relaciones Internacionales de la Universidad Nacional (IEPRI), Consejería de Paz, Industrias Zenú, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Bancolombia, Fundación Éxito, Industrias Noel, Corfinsura, Intercor, Broederlijk Delen (Belgium), Fundación Konrad Adenauer (Germany), Organización Internacional para las Migraciones (OIM), UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR), Universidad para la Paz de Naciones Unidas (Costa Rica), Peacefund (Canada), Fondo de Iniciativas Locales para Colombia (Canada), International Media Support (Dinamarca), Philip Morris, diplomatic representatives of Germany and the US in Colombia, Reporteros Sin Fronteras (Sweden), National Endowment for Democracy (US), among others.

Geographical area of operation

Offices are in Bogotá but they work on a national level and have organised workshops in 28 different municipalities.
