Human Rights and Environmental Education Centre (HUREC)
The organisation protects human rights, especially the rights of children, which have been violated as a result of the conflict in Nepal.
Overview
HUREC was established in 1993 with the aim of working for the protection and promotion of human rights. In more recent years, the organisation has started working in the field of peace and conflict resolution with the belief that military means are not a viable option for the cessation of the armed conflict in Nepal.
HUREC has been working with the aim of protecting and promoting human rights in order to ensure the creation of a peaceful society. The organisation focuses on work in the children’s rights sector and aims to ensure children’s position as zones of peace. There are further aims to determine the causes of structural violence at the local level (which it believes are also the causes of armed conflict in Nepal) and support the peaceful resolution of the conflict.
HUREC has recruited 25 human rights defenders and deploys them to highlight human rights violations both in general and in connection with the armed conflict. The defenders also document these cases of human rights violations.
The organisation has formed 16 children’s clubs which are attended by 220 children. Some of these children are conflict victims. The clubs have protested against the violation of children’s rights both in general and in connection with armed conflict. The organisation has also mobilised the children’s clubs for peace activities in their schools and their respective areas by involving them in training and workshops in conflict transformation and peacebuilding. The children’s clubs sometimes facilitate the resolution of neighbourhood disputes.
HUREC has been able to increase its own awareness of the agendas held by various groups (such as conflict victims, Dalits, and women) in the negotiation process. The organisation has come to understand that the peace process will only be successful if people's agendas are addressed at the negotiating table.
