Human Rights and Environment Concern Centre (HURIECOC)

The organisation aims to reduce the impact of the conflict in Nepal by researching and disseminating information on missing persons.

Overview

HURIECOC was established with the aim of promoting and protecting human rights, peace and justice.

In pursuit of the above aims, the organisation has been working to minimise the impacts of conflict by reducing human rights violations, creating pressure to make public the names of missing people in connection with the conflict, and monitoring, documenting and disseminating information regarding human rights violations.

In addition, HURIECOC has documented and disseminated data of conflict victims in the district. It has made people aware of human rights and nonviolent means of conflict resolution.

The organisation has the following aims and objectives:

  • promotion and protection of human rights;
  • understanding peaceful means for conflict resolution;
  • understanding the Maoist conflict;
  • minimising the impact of the Maoist conflict on innocent civilians; and
  • minimising immunity.

HURIECOC has been working to protect and promote human rights and establish peace in the district in which it operates. It has been monitoring and documenting human rights violations in general and in particular those in connection with the armed conflict.

The organisation has been supporting conflict victims by rehabilitating them in their respective areas. It has resettled around 125 members of families connected to the Royal Nepal Army in their own houses who had been forced to leave due to the Maoist threat.

It has conducted training on human rights, conflict resolution and peacebuilding. Some of the people who took the training have now joined an agricultural labour organisation which has been working to better the situation for workers.

The organisation took the initiative to organise a programme to put pressure on the conflicting parties (mainly the State party) to publicise the names of missing people in connection with the conflict together with 163 members of the victims’ families last year.

HURIECOC has established relations with both of the conflicting parties. Last year it secured the release of two persons who were arrested by police after being falsely accused in connection with the Maoist conflict.

It has noticed that the impacts of the conflict have been increasing daily and that the country is not going to be able to bear it for long. Therefore, the Maoist conflict should be resolved by peaceful means as soon as possible.
