Friends for Peace (FFP)

FFP works with local and international specialists in Nepal through research, training and workshops to share their experiences on peacebuilding.

Overview

The mission of FFP is to create a forum in which issues related to conflict in Nepal can be researched, debated and understood, and a more informed debate and dialogue generated for a political settlement. The immediate objective of the organisation is the establishment of a credible knowledge base that provides technical expertise on issues of concern in the current negotiations and wider peace process. It is hoped this will facilitate the increased participation of civil society, organisations and individuals in bringing about a peaceful resolution to the Maoist insurgency. Furthermore, the FFP has identified post-conflict transformation as one of the most important areas to be worked on in Nepal. It has tentatively identified the initial components of this transformation as demobilisation, disarmament, reconstruction, rehabilitation, reintegration, reconciliation and humanitarian response.

Besides establishing a public library, the organisation has done research on security sector reform, international relations and peace studies, and has contributed greatly to the conflict transformation debate in Nepal. Research on the issue of Nepal’s international relations has been carried out to consider the country's historical relations with India and how India perceives the conflict situation in Nepal. One of the main areas of the research is India's Possible Role in the Future Peace Process in Nepal. In addition FFP has carried out research at the district level to document local peace initiatives in order to provide first hand experience of conflict. The research from two of the districts (Dolakha and Ramechhap) has already been published. The FFP has realised that the security sector must be reformed if the peace process in Nepal is to be sustainable and the organisation has proposed that many areas be brought under the focus of reform in order to sustain peace and democracy in Nepal.
