Centre for Childrens’ Theatre Development

The Centre for Children’s Theatre Development (CCTD) was created as part of the Multimedia Centre in Pristina, and allows Kosovan children to enage with their society's most pressing issues. Through drama the Centre teaches them about their rights, democracy, and reconciliation.

Overview

The Multimedia Centre was established in 2002 in Kosovo, with the aim of stimulating and developing visual and performing arts, especially contemporary theatre. The Multimedia Centre has staged a number of theatre productions for all ages; it has also published a number of plays and books on contemporary theatre and drama. It co-operates with theatres, theatre schools and art organisations around the globe. This is important to peace building in Kosovo because it creates and empowers multi-ethnic co-operation by promoting peace through mutual work in the domain of art. In 2006 it was nominated for the “Paris-Europa” award, which is given by the French company “Maison d'Europe et d'Orient” for the most innovative and successful theatre companies in Europe. The Multimedia Centre’s last production was “The Last Supper”, a performance produced jointly with The Markus Zohner Theatre Company, which is based in Switzerland.

The Centre for Children’s Theatre Development (CCTD) was created as part of the Multimedia Centre in Pristina, with the focus of its activities on theatre for children and young people, emphasising its educational and social role. CCTD intends to explore on stage the actual problems that preoccupy children and young people. The parallel missions of CCTD are to stimulate playwriting for children's and young people's theatre, and to use theatre as a forum to educate children on their rights, democracy and reconciliation. CCTD’s activities deal with some of the most challenging problems of Kosovan society today. One of their most ambitious projects in 2005 and 2006 was the theatre performance “The longest winter”, an Albanian – Serbian project about missing persons from the last war in Kosovo. This particular problem mobilised both communities to work together, in solidarity with the families of the missing persons.
