ASAD

This organisation uses a wide variety of means - from community centres to NGO coalitions - to bring together different ethnic groups, and to educate and develop communities in Sabaragamuwa, Eastern, Central, and Uva Provinces in Sri Lanka.

Overview

The organisation’s objectives are: (i) to mobilise and strengthen communities through holistic development, (ii) to promote coexistence, and (iii) to develop peace in Sri Lanka.

ASAD works in the war and tsunami affected areas of Trincomalee and Ampara, encouraging the war-affected people and communities to rebuild their lives and facilitating conflict transformation by providing vocational training.

We organise and provide training in education, health, human rights, environmental issues, peace building, income generation, and community development to achieve these objectives. Through our work, we have been able to establish peace, vocational training, and community development centres in the Trincomalee, Ampara and Kegalla districts.

Our organisational work has taught us that creating a peaceful environment takes a lot of hard work and commitment. For us to have maximum impact, we have found it important to live in the community with which we work. In that way both the community and the organisation learn from the work they do together and the changing and learning process goes both ways.
