Ahoada East/West Women Association

The aim of the association is to reduce poverty and eliminate harmful practices against women in the community.

Overview

Ahoada East/West Women Association was founded  in May 2004 by a small group from Ubio community in Ahoada West LGA. But currently enjoy membership from community in Ahoada East also. The aim of the association is to reduce poverty and eliminate harmful practices against women in the community. They pursue these goals:

  1. Through encouragement and support for farming and trading activities of their members.
  2. They sensitize each other on the gains of educating their children (male or female), discouraging practices were women give their children of school age away to wealth urban dwellers as helps for a fees.
  3. Advocating for the change of certain laws that are not favourable to women such as female circumcision, and compelling young widows to stay in mourning (wearing only black clothes through out the period) for at least one year. 
  4.  A message to other organizations is not to relent despite challenges in their effort to empower themselves, they should continue spreading the message of peace particularly in those communities that have been torn by any form of conflict.

What Services Are Provided?

1. Enlightening young girls on the life limitations of early marriage using some of their members as examples.
2. Engage Youths of the community, in dialogue for peace through town hall meetings, as it is necessary in working towards resolving community conflict.
3. Advocate on behalf of women to the traditional rulers/elders towards the elimination of unjust customs and laws.
4. Promoting a savings culture among members
