Local Initiative for Peace

The initiative works with local people in Nepal to promote a just and corruption-free society.

Description

The programme was designed to raise awareness for peace amongst the people of the Bardiya district and raise their capability for non-violent means of conflict transformation and peacebuilding. The District Peace Conference saw participation from almost all social organisations, trade unions, bar associations, human rights and peace organisations, women’s organisations, journalists and ethnic groups in the district.

Aims / Objectives

PCDF aims for the establishment of peace, harmony and social justice in the society, free from corruption. It believes that social injustice and corruption are fuelling the Maoist conflict in Nepal and these should be eliminated to establish lasting peace.

How it is Articulated

After the District Peace Conference was organised, some participants also organised similar conferences in their respective areas. However, due to the political changes in the country after February 1st 2005, the organisation could not perform follow-up programmes to strengthen the nascent initiatives for peace and democracy such as the movement for peace through conferences in the district.

Achievements / Learning Points

PCDF has learnt from the District Peace Conference that active and inclusive participation is the means to the success of any kind of work. The District Peace Conference was organised to raise awareness for peace in the district and put pressure on the conflicting parties from the local level to hold dialogue. High numbers of people participated in the peace conference and some of the participants have organised similar conferences in their respective areas. Accountability and transparency are necessary to the longevity of any kind of organisation including peace organisations.
