Institute of Human Rights Communication Nepal (IHRICON)
IHRICON is an organisation set up by professionals in various fields, working to bring about changes in what it perceives as a negative human rights record, with particular regard to women and children, and to strengthen women's ability to become effective peacebuilders in Nepal.
Overview
IHRICON was formed by a team of human rights, peace and media professionals who have been working actively in these fields. The organisation conducts innovative and high profile advocacy campaigns and endeavours to bring positive changes to human rights and peace related issues, particularly focusing on women’s and children’s rights.
The overall goal of IHRICON is to create a just and equal society in the presence of the media community, where human rights and values, including those of women and children, are respected. The IHRICON has ensured that the rights of women and children have been highly respected even in the worst situations of the Maoist armed conflict.
The IHRICON has realised that increasing numbers of civilians have been victimised by the Maoist conflict and that these numbers include many women and children. Furthermore, the Institute considers women not only as victims of the conflict but also as key actors for peace. Many women in the conflict areas have been developing themselves as peace workers, although the positive impacts are yet not entirely visible. However, the IHRICON has realised this and is working to promote and to strengthen women's peace work and develop their leadership skills. The Institute has also been working to increase awareness of the impacts of the conflict, especially upon women and children and to minimise such impacts. It has been providing them with training on human rights, conflict resolution and transformation, a programme of women’s leadership and a programme on children. It has also published a research book on Women and Children in the Periphery of the Maoist War in Nepal.
