Women Empowerment Programme

This Nepali initiative mobilises women's groups to raise awareness in their communities of human rights and peace, and empowers those same women to support the peace process through income generation and women's rights training.

Description

Seto Guras Bal Bikash Sewa (SGBVS) developed and is currently implementing the Women Empowerment Programme to empower women through a rights-based approach as well as through economic betterment. The initiative further seeks to make women aware of the ongoing peace process.

Aims / Objectives

  • To make women aware of their rights;
  • To make people aware of peace; and
  • To motivate people to get involved in the current peace process.

How it is Articulated

  • Women's groups formed;
  • Training on women's rights and savings and credit;
  • Awareness campaign on domestic violence; and
  • Workshop on the role of women in peacebuilding.

Achievements / Learning Points

171 women have participated in the Women Empowerment Programme. SGBVS has provided them with a package programme on peacebuilding, women's rights, income generation and savings and credit. These women have been mobilising through groups to raise awareness of human rights, women's rights and the peace process. The women's groups have organised meetings, held seminars, provided training and conducted workshops on human rights, women's rights, and peacebuilding in their respective areas. SGBVS has noticed that women in the programme areas have become empowered and got involved in public performance and peace activities.

Through this initiative and the Gender Mainstreaming Programme, SGBVS has learnt that without improving women's economic, social and public status, making them men's equals, and meaningfully involving them in the peace process, Nepal's peace process will remain incomplete.
