Training the Trainers on Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding

This initiative focuses on building the capacity of NGO and INGO activists to support the peaceful resolution of the Nepali conflict and enable them to promote future peacebuilding measures.

Description

This initiative took place in early 2002 and aimed to build awareness and support for the peaceful resolution of the conflict and to build the capacity of the peace workers. The Training the Trainers (ToT) programme was further aimed at preparing a team of trainers (the participants were mostly NGO activists from different parts of the country) in a context of violent conflict, as there was a need for people to proactively intervene for conflict resolution.

Aims / Objectives

The specific aim of the ToT programme was to prepare a team of trainers and to enhance their knowledge and understanding of conflict analysis, intervention tools and planning for peace.

• Collaborative planning (planning to develop the modality of ToT and discuss the subjects and contents to be covered, alongside the prospective participants and trainers); and

The ToT programme has proved useful to the participants in helping them understand the dynamics of conflict and politics at different levels. The ToT programme has enhanced their leadership capacity as well as developed them as trainers in the field of conflict resolution and peacebuilding. We do not yet have the necessary financial support to conduct a formal evaluation, but we expect that the former participants are currently engaged in conflict resolution work.

Some participants voluntarily contact us whilst we invite others directly for our training programme. We have carried out one follow-up programme for the ToT participants, which incorporated an evaluation part.

The ToT participants have been trainers and resource persons in many programmes, and have been invited by NGOs and INGOs to work as trainers. This statement is made based on the information provided to us by the participants voluntarily.

The learning point is that the selection of participants is important in order to produce the desired results. The selection is based on the criteria that the participants are working in organisations that are engaged in conflict resolution and peacebuilding work. Also, their commitment is highly important, which comes out during the needs analysis.

After the ToT, a training manual on "Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding" was published and it is still gaining popularity; NPC is now publishing the third edition.
