Peace & Environment Forum and Peace Camps

A series of training workshops, seminars, exhibitions and youth camps aimed at promoting peace, conservation and trust between communities.

Description

The initiative involves capacity building through workshops, seminars and training courses for young people who have been affected by the civil war in the area. The camps also aim to build trust and confidence between different communities through various activities ranging from sports to arts and cultural development.

Aims / Objectives

  • to raise environmental awareness;
  • to encourage the spirit of participation and self-help;
  • to raise awareness on consumer protection and rights;
  • to spread the culture of peace in the areas focused upon;
  • to begin tree planting activities for homes and schools.

How it is articulated

Training workshops, seminars, exhibitions and through youth training camps

Achievements / Learning Points

As part of this initiative, the Environmentalist Society conducted workshops in the Blue Nile-Damzin and the Nuba Mountain regions, held a peace and environment forum in AlFath/El Jikheis (Kartoum area), facilitated discussion on land tenure and environmental conflict in Darfur and ran training courses for NGOs working in the area of emergency relief. It also organised a peace camp in the Nuba Mountain area.

The organisation successfully managed to establish peace training camps for young people in the Nuba mountain area of Southern Kordofan. Having secured extra funding from the Fredrich Eibert Foundation and the European Commission, the Environmentalist Society intends to conduct training workshops rather than peace forums alone.
