Local Initiative for Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding
The initiative aims to keep young people out of the conflict in Nepal by providing them with the necessary skills and training to support themselves economically.
Description
The initiative is designed to minimise the effects of the conflict, especially the effects on women and children, and to raise awareness of peace among the people of Jajarkot.
Aims / Objectives
It aims to raise people’s awareness of peace and economic sustainability in order to prevent youths in particular from involving themselves in the Maoist conflict, as well as providing health improvement at the local level.
How it is Articulated
The initiative involves:
- training on skill development and income generation;
- training of trainers (TOT) on human rights and conflict transformation;
- youth employment programme;
- support to victims of the conflict - women and children;
- education support to children;
- health services - health camp, sanitation programme.
Achievements / Learning Points
- Some of the participants of the income generation have started businesses such as a vegetable farm after the income generation training.
- The Youth Employment Programme was effective in preventing young people becoming involved in violent activities because they are engaged in some sort of employment activity.
- People in Jajarkot have gradually become aware of non-violent means of resolving differences and disputes.
