The initiative has been developed with the realisation that more and more innocent people have been victimised by both of the conflicting parties. Local people in particular have left their homes and moved to district capitals, Kathmandu or across the border into India due to threats by both sides. Both conflicting parties have been committing gross human rights violations and ignoring international humanitarian laws during conflict.
The organisation has been working with the aims of minimising human rights violations, rehabilitating conflict victims and displaced people, and making people aware of nonviolent means of conflict resolution.
The organisation has the following aims within the initiative:
Documentation and dissemination of information on human rights violations in the district, lobbying and advocacy, rehabilitation services, training and workshops.
HURIECOC has noticed that disappearance cases in connection with the conflict have gradually reduced. Conflict victims have been resettled and have resumed normal life as a result of the initiative.
The organisation has established links with both of the conflicting parties and is pressuring them to respect human rights and humanitarian laws.
Human rights violations in connection with the conflict have been drawing public attention due to the documentation and dissemination of information regarding the violation cases by the organisation.
People's capacities with regards to human rights and nonviolent means of conflict resolution have been developed.
