Human Rights Protection and Peace Programme

The initiative aims to reduce the prevalence and soften the impact of human rights violations and suffering in connection with the conflict in Nepal.

Description

The initiative has been developed with the realisation that more and more innocent people have been victimised by both of the conflicting parties. Local people in particular have left their homes and moved to district capitals, Kathmandu or across the border into India due to threats by both sides.  Both conflicting parties have been committing gross human rights violations and ignoring international humanitarian laws during conflict.
The organisation has been working with the aims of minimising human rights violations, rehabilitating conflict victims and displaced people, and making people aware of nonviolent means of conflict resolution.

Aims / Objectives

The organisation has the following aims within the initiative:

  • to provide rehabilitation services to the conflict victims;
  • to provide legal services to the conflict victims;
  • to pressurise both of the conflicting parties to accept liability for human rights and humanitarian laws;
  • to expose hidden human rights violations;
  • to make people knowledgable about peaceful means of conflict resolution and various components of peacebuilding.

How it is Articulated

Documentation and dissemination of information on human rights violations in the district, lobbying and advocacy, rehabilitation services, training and workshops.

Achievements / Learning Points

HURIECOC has noticed that disappearance cases in connection with the conflict have gradually reduced. Conflict victims have been resettled and have resumed normal life as a result of the initiative.

The organisation has established links with both of the conflicting parties and is pressuring them to respect human rights and humanitarian laws.

Human rights violations in connection with the conflict have been drawing public attention due to the documentation and dissemination of information regarding the violation cases by the organisation.

People's capacities with regards to human rights and nonviolent means of conflict resolution have been developed.
