Human Rights Leadership Development Programme

A project to mitigate human rights violations in Nepal through developing leadership skills, legal awareness and a culture of non-violence among victims' groups.

Description

The initiative is based on the belief that the human rights situation in Nepal must be improved, and that local people need to become aware of nonviolent means of conflict transformation and peacebuilding. It also holds that victims should be rehabilitated and encouraged to file legal cases to obtain justice.

Aims / Objectives

The organisation aims to:

  • develop human rights and peace leaders;
  • minimise the impact of the conflict on civilians, and minimise human rights violations in connection with the conflict;
  • raise people’s awareness of non-violent means of conflict resolution and encourage them to practice them when necessary.

How it is Articulated

  • Training workshops on human rights and conflict resolution;
  • documenting and disseminating information on human rights violations;
  • the formation of conflict victim groups to raise their capacity for human rights and peace;
  • interactions, meetings and seminars.

Achievements / Learning Points

The organisation has developed human rights and peace leaders in the district with the specific aim of defending human rights in connection with the conflict and raising people's awareness of peace. It has also formed groups of the conflict victims and raised their awareness about human rights and peace.

The groups have been working to minimise human rights violations in connection with the conflict.  They have also worked to raise people's awareness of non-violent means of conflict resolution by conducting interactions and seminars.  At least the conflict victims now feel that their voices have been heard.

Some of the conflict victims have filed cases in court and with the National Human Rights Commission, assisted by RHRO.

The organisation has noticed that the groups of conflict victims have been working autonomously and building up their capacity on human rights and peace.
