Human Rights and Peace Programme

The initiative was set up to promote human rights and to raise awareness of peaceful means of conflict resolution in Nepal.

Description

The Human Rights and Peace Programme was developed to enable people to defend human rights and advocate for peace. It was further designed to encourage the rejection of violence as a means of conflict resolution and to make people aware of peaceful means.

Aims / Objectives

  • To increase awareness of human rights and peace,
  • to increase support and knowledge of positive peace;
  • to encourage people to reject violence; and
  • to strengthen knowledge and use of non-violent means of conflict resolution.

How it is articulated

Training / workshops, seminars, rallies, house visits, interactions, symposia.

Achievements / Learning Points

FOSAD conducts human rights and conflict resolution training in the Rupandehi district.  As a result the people of the district have gradually become more aware of human rights and peace, which was reflected in the involvement and attendance at last year's peace rallies.

The Human Rights and Peace Programme frequently organises peace rallies to encourage people to reject violence and gather support for peace. The famed peace rally of Butwal last year received coverage from many local and national newspapers.

The organisers have found that an effective way to increase awareness of human rights and to gather support for peaceful means of conflict resolution is frequent visits to houses in the villages, interacting with people and discussing human rights and peace issues.
