Regular monitoring of human rights and conflict situation

An initiative aimed at raising awareness of human rights violations in Nepal, acting as a mouthpiece for the abused and vulnerable.

Description

This initiative is run by the Institute of Peace and Development (INPED) and operates as a fact finding and documenting mission on the human rights of the people of Nepal. Through this work, INPED raise awareness of abuses and help the voices of the abused to be heard through press releases and other publicity. The initiative also monitors and documents the status of children’s human rights through the conflict. There is also monitoring of the cantonment of Maoist combatants.

Aims / Objectives

  • The protection and promotion of human rights;
  • The documentation of the consequences of internal armed conflict; and
  • Placing pressure on those in power to oversee a peaceful end to the conflict.

How it is Articulated

The initiative operates through the documentation of human rights violations and the release of statements and other publicity. This raises the voice of the vulnerable and helps to encourage the following of humanitarian law during the armed conflict. Other documentation charts the situation for the human rights of children. These practices aim to aid the implementation of a comprehensive peace accord on a local level.

Achievements / Learning Points

  • An increased awareness of the human rights situation in the conflict; and
  • The publication of information related to human rights violations made available for all.

Funding Resources

  • Deutscher Entwicklungsdienst (DED); and
  • Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC).
