Dalit Mainstreaming in Peace Process

This initiative seeks to get the rights and concerns of Dalits recognised and respected at the level of national policy-making in Nepal.

Description

Many general Dalit issues, as well as those relating specifically to the conflict, should be addressed in national policy but have so far been neglected. The JMC, therefore, has developed this programme to publish information on, and draw attention to these issues, with the aim of applying pressure to the relevant sectors.

Aims / Objectives

• To publicise various issues concerning Dalits;
• to lobby at the national level, using information gathered through discussion and interaction programmes.

How it is Articulated

Conducting discussion and interaction, writing up the outcomes and publicising the subsequent reports.

Achievements / Learning Points

The Jagaran Media Centre has been conducting face-to-face interaction and discussion programmes on many thematic issues regarding the Dalit. It has carried out programmes on 'Democracy and the Dalit', 'Dalit and the Media', 'Reservation for the Dalit', 'the Maoist Civil War' and 'the Concerns of the Dalit', among others. It has proposed the issue of 'Restructuring in the Conflict' for future discussion.

Geographical Area of Operation

Mainly in Kathmandu, some areas outside of Kathmandu.
