FOSAD, Rupandehi
FOSAD is a human rights organisation which aims to reduce the impact of human rights violations as a result of the Maoist conflict in Nepal.
Overview
The organisation was established in 1996 by enthusiastic young people dedicated to human rights and peace. They have been working for the promotion and protection of human rights since its establishment. More recently they have broadened their areas of work into peace and conflict. They believe the human rights situation in Nepal has worsened since the Maoist conflict began and innocent civilians have composed considerable numbers of the conflict victims. Both conflicting parties have been found equally responsible for human rights violations and violation of humanitarian laws.
FOSAD has found most of the people in the district unaware of non-violent means for conflict resolution such as dialogue, facilitation, mediation and negotiation although they have been practising them in their everyday lives. Therefore, it has been working to strengthen these methods of conflict resolution which people may have been using, knowingly or unknowingly
The organisation has the following aims and objectives:
- to improve the human rights situation;
- to increase awareness of positive peace;
- to strengthen and increase the use of non-violent means of conflict resolution.
The organisation has established links with the conflicting parties in the district. It has been lobbying the conflicting parties and advocating for the protection and promotion of human rights during the conflict. It has conducted training and workshops on human rights and conflict resolution in order to enable people to defend human rights violations and gain a greater understanding of peace.
FOSAD believe that the internal armed conflict in Nepal should be resolved by peaceful means only, rather than by military force.
