Kotido Peace Initiative (KOPEIN).
KOPEIN seek to end violent raids and armed conflicts amongst the different ethnic pastoral groups, cattle rustlers, government and neighbouring communities within the Karamoja region. They conduct mediation, peace training and exchange visits, bringing together different ethnic groupsĀ for dialogue and co-existence.
KOPEIN organises peace meetings between rival pastoral groups and encourages shared cattle grazing amongst the Jie and Matheniko groups to promote good relationships and confidence building.
KOPEIN also organises public dialogue between local government officials and pastoral communities on issues such as lack of protection from raiders, peace spoilers, torture, education and alternative sources of livelihood to supplement farming. Other initiatives include cross-border meetings, sports for peace, and a village savings and loans scheme which targets former fighters and young people affected by violence.
