ALAM is a teachers’ association committed to educating the next generation about the importance of peacebuilding. By promoting the values of peace, democracy, justice, gender equality, human rights and development in schools, they seek to improve the quality of education for all Sudanese children.

School CPA Workshops

ALAM realised that secondary school pupils had a poor understanding of Sudan’s 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). Young people are Sudan’s future, yet without an understanding of the CPA they are ill-equipped to participate in building a sustainable peace. As teachers, ALAM felt it was their duty to not simply focus on academic achievement but to encourage students to become responsible citizens.

Originally, ALAM had hoped to cover all 2000 secondary schools around Khartoum but decided to focus on areas with high numbers of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Schools in these areas are often the site of conflicts between local students and newcomers, so ALAM felt work promoting peace was particularly important here. Through the project ALAM has worked with 100 schools around Khartoum.
