AlAbasia Association for Development and Peace.
AlAbasia aims to increase the public role of women and bring them fully into the peacebuilding process. They encourage women to become leaders in their communities and provide support in starting small businesses. Work has included:
- Workshops for women in areas such as gender awareness, human rights and family planning;
- Training in business management, book-keeping and IT skills and grants to support small businesses;
- Peacebuilding activities including a women’s drum group, workshops on conflict resolution and training in the Sudan’s 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
Peace Promotion Workshop
AlAbasia organised a workshop focused on ‘training trainers’, developing participants’ skills as peace champions able to motivate and lead others. Local organisations from some of Sudan’s most troubled regions were invited to send a member of staff to the workshop, which focused on how to raise awareness of Sudan’s 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement. They used role play to reflect on their experiences of the war and of conflict resolution and also discussed ways to avoid jargon and advocate peace in terms people can understand. The participants are among 150 community workers AlAbasia has trained to promote peace across the country.
