PHPO perceives the lack of interaction between ethnicities as a main cause of the conflict in Sri Lanka, and intends to promote national integration through their organisational work. PHPO was initiated by the Muslim community, but today staff are drawn from all of Sri Lanka’s ethnic groups. PHPO conducts peacebuilding and conflict transformation programmes across the district of Anuradhapura. Activities include human rights awareness campaigns, gender sensitivity programmes, female empowerment programmes and election monitoring.

In recognition of PHPO’s contribution to promote interaction and cooperation between different ethnicities, the organisation was invited as a Civil Society representative for a discussion at the Peace Secretariat in Vaunia with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Sri Lankan Government.

Nidahase Wedikawa (Stage for freedom)

PHPO are currently involved in the Nidahase Wedikawa project, in which a number of civil society organisations operating in Kekirawa region coordinate and mobilise together to act as agents against the war, violence and harassment.
