ASOQ’ANIL (Association Q’anil Maya Kaqchike Victims of Chimaltenango) facilitates the process of exhuming victims of the civil war and coordinating community-based burial ceremonies. These provide families with closure and a dignified service for their relatives. They work with coroners from anthropology establishments, international organisations and peace and justice programmes to identify the remains of victims. ASOQ’ANIL then prepares workshops with leaders at the municipal level and involves the church for burial service preparations.
This Association strives for sustainable change with peace and justice. By providing their service and instilling values of human rights, ASOQ’ANIL is able to alter the lives of those affected by the civil war in meaningful ways.
This local press coverage is of a march commemorating the National Day of Dignity for the Victims of the Civil War in one of the areas where ASOQ’ANIL operates. It took place in February 2014.
