New Generation.
New Generation works to reintegrate former street kids back into normal life, and organises activities such as workshops and conferences to raise awareness of peace, cohabitation and leadership. These are aimed at both educated and less privileged young people, helping them all to develop their skills as potential future leaders. In 2003, New Generation was awarded the ‘Think Thank Africa’ prize as the best youth initiative in Africa.
Empowering Young Leaders
In October 2004 New Generation started to organise monthly conferences to develop the leadership potential of young people. Participants come from secondary schools and universities, and attend workshops on major issues affecting young people in Burundi. The subject of the events is usually the question of how Burundi can achieve integrated development, starting with a change in attitudes.
The events take place in Bujumbura and in two provinces of Burundi. Lecturers come from New Generation, and can also be well-known civil society leaders, ambassadors, UN representatives, university professors, or other experts. A major part of New Generation’s work is to challenge fatalism, and prove that change is really possible if people – especially young people – can wake up and change their ways of thinking.
