Campaign for Conflict Mediation and Peacebuilding
Through INSEC's involvement at the national level and its high level influence, this initiative seeks heighten civil society's influence on all involved in the interim government (political parties and former Maoist cadres) to foster a culture of respect for human rights.
Description
This ongoing initiative fosters and promotes a culture of human rights and democracy through state mechanism. It further attempts to strengthen the civil society alliance for human rights and peace to pressure the government into respecting its human rights obligations.
Aims / Objectives
- To create adequate pressure by civil society for the fulfilment of state obligations on human rights; and
- To create pressure to form or revise and implement laws and policies from a human rights perspective.

- Workshops;
- Training for security personnel;
- Interaction and meetings;
- Advocacy and campaign;
- Leadership (human rights and leadership);
- Publication of handbook and poster; and
- Follow-up meetings.
Achievements / Learning Points
The peace process in Nepal is fully under way, with an interim government composed of politicians and Maoists. INSEC is one of the national level human rights organisations and it has access to every political party. INSEC has learnt that human rights will be guaranteed in the presence of democracy and peace can only last if human rights are guaranteed. The following will be the achievements of this initiative:
- Formation of a human rights alliance between CBOs with specific mandates and the development of a strategic framework for the promotion and protection of human rights;
- Civil society starts to be actively involved in human rights monitoring like fact-finding, advocacy, national and international lobbying for human rights protection;
- Large numbers of security personnel, political leaders and Maoist cadres trained on human rights and following the norms and principles of international humanitarian law;
- State policy makers signed international treaties;
- National level policy makers identified discriminatory laws and gradually revised them; and
- Political parties formed human rights units in their respective structure.
